America’s Next Top Model Winner - Whitney Thompson, Plus Size or Perfect?
ANTM winner Whitney Thompson is what I would call gorgeous…
She is in proportion, looks super healthy and toned and has a face and figure that could grace any campaign or cover! Producers, critics and fans of the show are patting themselves on the back for a job well done!
Look at us, we have just turned out our first “Plus Size Winner”! If she is plus size, then God only help the rest of us! While I think it’s amazing that the show has turned out a winner that doesn’t resemble a match stick with a bobble head, I worry that other women out there, especially teenage girls seeing Whitney touted as plus size could really effect their perception of reality.
The hedlines have said everything from “Pleasantly Plump” to “Fabulous and Phat”.
The whiny little gender challenged queen from ANTM other wise known as Miss J, had the audacity to say “OF COURSE WHITNEY HAS ISSUES! SHE SO FAT!” Tyra stepped in and defended… “She is only MODEL FAT. Not REALLY fat.”
Yes in terms of high fashion and the world of haute couture and catwalks she could be considered “plus size” next to a size 0, but in terms of “real women” she is still represents something many of us aspire to be.
Regardless of this clarification from Tyra, millions of women watch this show, and actually take what these so called “experts” say seriously… Since when has a size 10 woman, been considered pleasantly plump or worse “plus size” in the “real” world?
If we keep labeling and judging women purely on genetics, what kind of message are we sending to our younger generations? Will we face a world when in 15 - 20 years time anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating and body dysmorphic disorders will be common place?
Everything in this world has it’s place… high fashion, models, aspirational brands, and stupid reality TV shows that deliver cheap entertainment to the masses and big returns to the producers. However when women get up each morning feeling as though they can not ever get close to their warped ideal, there is no longer anything aspirational or entertaining about it.
If we are living in a world where a 5′11 size 10 glamazon is considered plus size, what do you call a 5′4 size 16 woman?
